伊索(Aesop)
希臘最偉大的寓言家,誕生於薩摩斯島(Samos,位於愛琴海東部,接近現今的土耳其海岸),生存年代大紀是紀元前六世紀左右。他的出身是一名奴隸,但因為他的機智與豐富才學,得以被釋放而成為自由民。
現今流傳下來的『伊索寓言』故事,根據研究,其實只有一部分是真正由伊索本人所著作的。其他的部分,有一些是當地流傳已久的民間故事,伊索只是舊瓶新裝,將之彙整過後,重新拿來演說;另有一部分,乃根源於他崇高的說書人地位,因為當時代的人,把只要是伊索曾經公開講過的故事,都認為是由他所創作的作品。
『伊索寓言』究竟曾被翻譯成幾種語言,迄今難以估計。而其中許多故事,更演變成為現代語言中的一部分,如在英文中,sour
grapes 己經成為envy的同義詞;而在中文裡,我們也有「酸葡萄心理」的說法。此書流傳之廣,風行之久,影響之深遠,由此可見一斑。
